The 3 Rs -
Reading, Robotics & Reflection
An experiment in integrating Birdbrain Robotics into the Reading Wonders curriculum. Utilizing the Reading Wonders reading curriculum, the monthly writing focus, eligible science content, and the design process, students create robotic animals. Through the design process, students reflect on their design, process, and collaborative work to be successful. We will discuss how this all came together and how I have reflected on the process as an educator.

Conference Presentation

I presented at the National Student Teacher and Supervision Conference at West Chester University.
During an independent study in the summer of 2015 with Dr. Carol Smith, I learned about Mulimodal Resources. In culmination of the course, I created the following resources dually purposed for student and teacher use.
The purpose of the resource is to make the field trip interactive and educational and contain a hub of information to help guide research and learning as well as provide resources to create multimodal resources.
The project was perfectly in line with Julie Coiro's yet to be published research on Personal Digital Inquiry (PDI) in K-8 classrooms. Her research was recently published in The Reading Teacher March/April isssue.

Building Substitute
These are some of my experiences from this past year as the Building Substitute for Westtown Thornbury Elementary in West Chester Area School District.
1 Week with 5th Grade Learning SupportOur 5th Grade learning support teacher gave me the opportunity to plan for her students for the week she was out. We celebrated Poetry Month and Earth Day with cross curricular and engaging lessons. What you see above is the culminating project the student created with nature and haiku. Lesson Plans to come...
Subbing ExtrasThe other day as a music substitute we learned about percussion instruments. I threw together this powerpoint to give the students a visual.
We needed an extra visual in Kindergarten, so I threw together this simple power point to deliver some key concepts: Double Consonants & Making Patterns
4th grade explored Symmetry in math and we had some hands on activities finding the lines of symmetry in different shapes.
At the end of the day, we started our investigation on magnetism. After we began the investigation we watched a quick clip of Bill Nye to explain what objects that stick to metal are made of.

2015-2016 School YearEdcamp PhillyMay 14th, I attended Edcamp Philly with my colleague who teaches HS Music at Mastery Charter Schools Thomas Campus. The camp was held at the Science Leadership Academy and attendance came from PA, NJ, and more! It was a great experience and I found out more about makerspaces and BreakoutEDU.
Edcamp Lancaster
April 23rd, myself and two other WTE teachers attended Edcamp Lancaster! It was a great learning experience and we all came out of it with ideas for the school.

Mr. Rogers, a 5th grade teacher at WTE, invited me into his classroom after PSSAs for an afternoon of Robotics. The students showed me their Dash & Dot robots and I taught them about my Sphero and BB8 bots.

Day-to-Day SubstituteJanuary-February 2016, I was a day to day substitute for West Chester Area School District and Tredyffrin-Easttown School District. Within these districts I have worked with grades K-5 as a classroom teacher and aide.
As a day-to-day substitute I made an effort to leave feedback for teachers and I did yoga with the classes I worked with. |
World Read Aloud DayWe celebrated World Read Aloud Day at the New Directions program by reading Mind Your Monsters by Catherine Bailey.
We used the book to fortify the magic word "please" and help our students with practice in recognition of their own behaviors. We created our monster and then asked them to PLEASE stop bothering us. |
